House M, Tsukuba
This commission was won in competition. The client is a doctor who required a building that would accommodate his home, as well as his surgery. Public and private entrances are kept apart, and internal spaces are planned out to provide private living accommodation adjacent the public surgery. But the flow of spaces, materiality and penetration of light are continuous throughout, to achieve an overall coherence to the building and its interior. Internal palette of materials revolves around an array of wooden surfaces and forms to provide a warmth, texture and simplicity, within a mix of single and double height volumes. Externally, the resultant form is wrapped in a continuous skin of blue tinted timber cladding, with contrasting slatted timber element of balustrade and brise soleil.
